I have just a couple of holiday photos that I want to share. First, Rebecca is wearing a new Hanukkah dress while my Christmas tree serves as a Hanukkah bush.
Tonight, December 5th, 2021, people who celebrate Hanukkah will light the final candle in the menorah. Two American Girl characters celebrate Hanukkah: Rebecca and Lindsey (Girl of the Year 2001).
And a quick note of things I learned today about Hanukkah bushes. In general, they are not encouraged as part of Hanukkah celebrations. But multifaith households are increasingly more common, so Hanukkah bushes are also getting more common. Human-wise, we celebrate Christmas in my house. But my dollies celebrate all sorts of holidays. So today my Christmas tree, which is blue by coincidence, is a Hanukkah bush.
Speaking of all sorts of holidays, Maryellen is setting out her shoe for Sankt Nikolaus like her German ancestors. Unlike Hanukkah, none of the American Girl characters celebrate Sankt Nikolaus day. I had to invent Maryellen’s German ancestors. I had a German coworker for a while and she would celebrate St Nicholas day with her kids, but I never have.
In Germany, children leave out their shoes for Sankt Nikolaus to fill with gifts. Santa comes on December 6th in Germany!
Those are the two celebrations happening in my dolly world today. I have a few more to share this season, and hopefully I’ll find the time to do it.
Happy Holidays!
